Calculating your Garage Door Weight with Pureform

Metal Weights (1mm thickness)

Titanium offers an exceptional strength-to-weight ratio. While it is heavier than aluminium, it is approximately half the weight of stainless steel and provides outstanding corrosion resistance. Because titanium is significantly stronger than aluminium, thinner gauges can often be specified while still achieving the required structural performance, helping to offset the additional material weight.

Flat sheet weight

The first step is calculating the flat sheet weight:

Weight (kg) = Area (m²) × Thickness (m) × Density (kg/m³)

 

Example:

A single 2m × 2.5m aluminium panel at 2mm thickness

 

Area
2 × 2.5 = 5 m²

 

Material volume
5 (area) × 0.002 (thickness) = 0.010 m³

 

Weight
0.01 x 2700 (density) = 27 kg sheet weight for a 2m x 2.5m panel

Folded panel weight

The finished panel weight increases because of:

  • returns/folds
  • cassette edges
  • fixing tabs
  • overlaps
  • additional material used beyond visible face

Example:

A cassette panel with a 600 mm visible face may require a 640 mm blank width once side returns, fixing flanges and fabrication allowances are included.

 

So material used per m² ≠ visible panel area. Explained by “Blank cut size” below.

With the information in the table above, we can now calculate the folded panel weight (accounting for visible – the face of the panel, and hidden material in the system’s folds and/or fixing strips).

 

Calculating folded panel weight:

  1. Panels per sqm x blank cut size per panel = material quantity per sqm
  2. Material quantity per sqm x square metre material weight = weight of folded panels per sqm

Example:

  1. 1.67 x 0.640 m = 1.07 sqm of material
  2. 1.07 sqm x 5.4 kg = 5.76 kg per sqm of folded 600mm cover width 2mm Aluminium Cassette panels

The kilogram weight per square metre of your folded panels can then be multiplied across the overall square metre size of your garage door. This information can be given to your garage door provider.

 

eg. 5.76 kg x 10.08m² = 58.1 kg total for your 2100mm high x 4800mm wide garage door.

Garage door manufacturers specify maximum operating weights for sectional and panel lift doors. Final approval should always be confirmed with the garage door manufacturer or automation supplier. Total operating weight should include the cladding, support framing, hardware and any additional components.
